Building Your First Dashboard
Learn how to create an interactive dashboard using the Lucaro dashboard builder with drag-and-drop visualizations.
Prerequisites
- A Lucaro project with at least one connected data source
- Some metrics defined in your Metrics Registry (optional but recommended)
Step 1: Create a New Dashboard
Navigate to your project and click the New Dashboard button in the top right corner. Give your dashboard a descriptive name and optional description.
You'll be taken to the dashboard builder where you can start adding visualizations.
Step 2: Add Your First Visualization
Click the + Add View button to add a new visualization. You can choose from several options:
- From Metrics Registry - Use pre-defined metrics for consistent analytics
- Custom Query - Write a custom SQL query for ad-hoc analysis
- AI Suggestion - Let Lucaro suggest visualizations based on your data
Example: Creating a Revenue Trend Chart
- Click + Add View and select From Metrics Registry
- Select the
monthly_revenuemetric - Choose Line Chart as the visualization type
- Set the time dimension to
date - Click Add to Dashboard
Step 3: Configure Chart Settings
Click on any visualization to open its configuration panel. Here you can customize:
Data Settings
- Metrics and dimensions
- Filters and date ranges
- Aggregation methods
- Sort order
Display Settings
- Chart type
- Colors and themes
- Axis labels
- Number formatting
Step 4: Arrange the Layout
Drag and drop visualizations to arrange them on your dashboard. You can:
- Resize views by dragging their corners
- Reorder views by dragging their title bar
- Group related views together for better organization
Step 5: Add Filters
Add interactive filters to let users explore the data dynamically:
- Click + Add Filter in the dashboard toolbar
- Select a dimension to filter on (e.g.,
region) - Choose the filter type (dropdown, multi-select, date range)
- Configure which views the filter applies to
Filters appear at the top of the dashboard and automatically update all connected visualizations.
Step 6: Save and Share
Click Save to save your dashboard. You can then share it with your team:
- Share Link - Generate a link for team members with access
- Schedule Email - Send automated reports to stakeholders
- Embed - Embed the dashboard in other applications
- Export - Download as PDF, PNG, or CSV
Pro Tips
- Use the Metrics Registry - Pre-defined metrics ensure consistency across all dashboards
- Start with KPIs - Add number cards at the top for key metrics at a glance
- Add context - Use text widgets to explain what the data means
- Test filters - Verify that filters work correctly before sharing
